Insightful Christian observers have been maintaining for some time now that the secular West is heading off a cliff. Ten more minutes of this, and the Abyss awaits us. Dabney in the nineteenth century and the Reconstructionists in the last quarter of the twentieth century were united in the conviction that any attempt on our part to govern ourselves without reference to God was going to end in chaos. The culture car that we launched off the cliff started to tumble end over end. And then, to add insult to injury, it turned into a clown car on the way down, with any number of clowns falling out.

And now that we are surrounded by the long-predicted chaos, it is proving difficult to explain why we didn’t listen to the trenchant Christian critiques, critiques that were offered to us when it would have been a lot easier to do something about it.
